Duties and Responsibilities • Responsible for maintaining good public relations with news media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans. • Presents information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results. • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Awareness of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance. • Maintains discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation. • Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants. • Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. Designs conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program. • Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance according to local clinic policy. • Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility. • Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant. • Gives constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct. • Understands the growth and development of middle school athletes. • Present at all practices and games. Provides assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant. • Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies. • Completes and submits proper paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries to the county athletic office within 24 hours. • Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection. • Directs student managers, assistants, trainers, and statisticians. • Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary, and contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. • Organizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for pre-season meetings. • Assists the Athletic Director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for the tournament and special sports events. • Participates in the budgeting function with the Athletic Director by establishing requirements for the next season. Recommends guidelines as to the type, style, color, or technical specifications of the equipment. Responsible for operating within budget appropriations. • Advises the Athletic Director and recommends policy, method, or procedural changes. • Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees. • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites. • Accountable for all equipment and/or collection of fees for any lost or unreturned equipment. Arranges for issuing, storing, and reconditioning or equipment and submits annual inventory and current records. • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing. • Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices; authorizes who may enter and issue or requisition equipment. • Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times. • Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility. Is responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment. • Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty. • Instills in each player respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use. • Performs such other duties as assigned by the Principal and or Superintendent of schools in keeping with Gaston County Board of Education Policy and North Carolina Administrative Code and Statutes. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies approved by the Gaston County Schools' Board of Education and is responsible for its implementation by the entire staff of the sports program. • Knowledge of existing system, state, and conference regulations; implements them consistently and interprets them for staff. • Ability and willingness to organize and supervise the track program. • Must have superior knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. • Understands the growth and development of players at the assigned school. Physical Requirements • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 25 pounds of force constantly to lift objects. • Must possess the visual acuity to operate required equipment and motor vehicles, use measuring devices, and inspect work for accuracy, thoroughness, and adherence to work standards and instructions. • Must also possess the visual acuity to prepare data and statistics, work with figures, and records processes, operate a computer, and do extensive research and reading. Minimum Training and Experience • Previous successful coaching experience in track. • Certification as a teacher by a state education agency. • Employment as a classroom teacher by the Gaston County Board of Education.
